1. Who We Are

NightShift is a free Chrome browser extension that applies dark mode to websites using CSS filter inversion. It is developed and maintained as an independent project and is available on the Chrome Web Store.

 

2. What Data We Collect

We collect no personal data whatsoever.

NightShift does not collect, store, transmit, or process any personally identifiable information. This includes but is not limited to:

 

—   Your name, email address, or any contact information

—   Your IP address or location

—   Your browsing history or the URLs of pages you visit

—   The content of any web pages you view

—   Any clicks, keystrokes, or user activity on websites

—   Device identifiers or hardware information

—   Any demographic or profile information

 

What IS stored: Only your appearance preferences (darkness, warmth, contrast, schedule). Saved using chrome.storage.local — entirely on your device. Never transmitted anywhere.

 

3. What Data Is Stored Locally

The following settings are saved locally on your device using the browser's built-in storage API. This data never leaves your device:

 

—   Dark mode on/off state (global)

—   Darkness intensity level (number between 0–100)

—   Warmth level (number between 0–100)

—   Contrast level (number between 0–100)

—   Image dimming preference (true/false)

—   Auto-schedule on/off and time window

—   Per-site override preferences (hostname + on/off value)

 

This data is stored only so the extension can remember your preferences between browser sessions. It is never synced to any server, shared with any third party, or used for any purpose other than applying your chosen dark mode settings.

 

4. Network Requests

NightShift makes zero network requests.

The extension does not communicate with any external server, API, or service. There are no analytics pings, no telemetry calls, no update checks to third-party servers, and no data uploads of any kind. All extension logic runs entirely within your browser.

 

5. Permissions Explained

NightShift requests the following Chrome permissions. Here is exactly why each one is needed:

 

activeTab	To communicate between the popup and the active tab, so settings changes apply instantly without a page reload.
storage	To save appearance preferences locally on your device using chrome.storage.local. No data is sent externally.
scripting	To inject the dark mode CSS filter into web pages when the extension is active.
tabs	To send messages from the popup to the content script running in the active tab.
alarms	To check auto-schedule settings once per minute so dark mode can enable/disable based on your configured time window.
<all_urls>	To apply dark mode styles to every website you visit. The extension only injects a visual CSS filter and never reads, copies, or transmits any page content.

 

6. Third Parties

NightShift does not share any data with third parties because it does not collect any data in the first place. There are no advertising partners, analytics providers, data brokers, or any other third-party services involved.

 

7. Children's Privacy

NightShift does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. The extension is safe for use by all ages.

 

8. Changes to This Policy

If this privacy policy is ever updated, the new version will be posted at this URL with an updated effective date. Since NightShift collects no data, any changes to this policy would only reflect changes to the extension's functionality, not changes to data practices.
